The Congress School is located on the outskirts of
Darjeeling and in late 2005 they seeked assistance for the rebuilding of their
classrooms, The classrooms were constructed of tin and leaked during the monsoon
season. £8,000 was donated by the Juniper Trust which enabled the
complete rebuilding of the School. In Spring 2006, York
College visited the school whilst on a trek to the Singalila Ridge with KE
adventure travel. The pupils assisted
with whitewashing the walls and joined in some celebrations to recognise the
completion of the School.
The Congress School before work commenced
Congress School completed in 2006With the leftover funds, they havenow built an additional hall with a stage - which serves as a recreation room with small attached library and a mini
theatre for the students to perform on stage. The school still require additional funds to complete the flooring of this hall and libary and
rooms both need furniture. Future visiting school groups could bring some story books and
indoor games for the students. Since completion, the school has attracted more students as conditions have improved considerably. Before completion, two classes were being taught in one class room, now they have their own class rooms which helps concentation and makes it easier for the teacher!
