Ladakh (India) – Flood Appeal  - 2010

This is a popular trekking area, home to many porters and trek staff employed by our friends at KE Adventure Travel. The people of Ladakh need your help!

The flooding caused by unusually heavy monsoon rains in the Northern Areas of Pakistan has been widely described in the news during the course of the last month. However, the relatively localised disaster that occurred in the popular trekking base of Leh, the capital of Ladakh, in Northern India, has gone largely unreported.

A series of devastating flash floods at the start of August ravaged Leh town and adjoining areas, causing hundreds of deaths (most unaccounted) and wiping out entire families. The survivors are homeless and many whose houses are still intact have lost all their agricultural land.

£3,500 sent to help the flood victims of Ladakh, initially bought 20 heaters to help get through the winter. Rebuilding has started and the money has been used to buy door and window frames for 5 houses. These were delivered by pony and cost approx £550 per house. The white scarves are the khadaks - ceremonial scarves put on newly constructed windows and doors.
