The Tibet Vision Project

The Tibet Vision Project sponsors mobile eye surgery hospital units and trains local doctors to treat the epidemic of cataract blindness afflicting the Tibetan people. In their "Eye Camps", hundreds of poor Tibetans receive free eye care from Tibetan eye surgeons and nurses performing modern lens-implant cataract operations. Their two main goals are to provide state of the art eye treatment to a population suffering from preventable cataract blindness and to assist Tibetans in developing their own medical resources to eliminate cataract blindness throughout Tibet by 2020.

Several times a year, a group of 6 to 8 Tibetan doctors, nurse and technicians travel long distances by Land Cruisers to remote and underserved rural areas, bringing with them an entire hospital unit - microscopes, lens implants, sutures, medicines - to provide free eye care to everyone who visits. Sight-restoring cataract surgery costs as little as $20 per patient.
